Blog Update: How Many Photos Will Be Taken in 2020?

For the last several years, we have worked with Keystone Intelligence (formerly Infotrends) to publish their forecast for the numbers of photos created and stored worldwide. We recently published the 2020 update with forecast data through 2022.

Bottom line… the world will be taking 1.4363 trillion photos and storing 7.3754 trillion photos in 2020. That’s a lot of pictures!

Wow, great fact share, thanks @Mylio_Osiris. I can’t believe 2% of photos are taken on tablets!? That’s crazy.

Do you have any data on what happened 2018-2019 that caused such a dramatic (8% rise)?

@byron We didn’t get that specific info from Keystone Intelligence, but what we did get would indicate that smartphone photography is the clear dominant segment creating new files. I would hypothesize that the continued adoption of smartphones worldwide as well as the advances in smartphone photo quality and compound file functions/formats (live photos, burst photos, HDR) are significant contributing factors. We are living in the best documented age, and this trend has not yet peaked.
